Old rail track -
abandoned, then a spark.
Transformed to green at elevation
now it's inspiration:
high rise park.
Maybe you have heard of the Highline Park in New York. That piece of elevated train track that was, after years of not being used, turned into a park. But did you know one of the first times an old railway track was turned into a park was in Paris? Where once the trains rode between Vincennes and the station at Place de la Bastille, now is the domain of runners, dog walkers, and other wanderers. Part of this park is on the Viaduc des Arts, which houses art galleries, but also workshops and shops for artisans and artists.
This green space used to be known as the Promenade Plantée, but is now named the Coulée verte René-Dumont and is in use as a park since 1993. It's a great example of a city reinventing itself and repurposing obsolete infrastructure. For me, it's also a great inspiration for a good game of "I wish this was...", in which you look at an abandoned plot or structure and imagine what would be great to create there.
