Piątek is Polish for Friday. And as I like alliteration, it goes very well with ‘Poetry’. So, from now on, I am sending you a poem every Friday. This is the first. It’s about refugees and how they sometimes are forced to travel halfway across the globe to built a new life in a place they don’t know. The quay in question is the Lloydkade in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. After the Second World War, a lot of people from the former Dutch colony now known as Indonesia set foot on Dutch soil for the first time on this quay. One of them was my dad.
